‘Uggie – My Story’: ‘The Artist' canine star's rags-to-riches memoir to be released

Simon & Schuster announced today that its Gallery Books imprint division will publish “Uggie – My Story,” the rags-to-riches shaggy-dog tale of the hammy Jack Russell terrier who starred in the Oscar winning movie “The Artist.” The book is scheduled to come out in October of this year. The canine’s many talents, such as his ability to delicately dance on his hind legs and gracefully lower his head in a sort of curtsy, earned him many accolades and honors, including the Golden Collar, the top dog in a movie award in February.

Uggie attended the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner on Saturday in Washington. He walked the red carpet on his hind legs and posed for pictures, attracting more attention than Diane Sawyer, who was standing next to him.

His scene-stealing scenes in “The Artist,” for which Uggie earned only $30,000, led to Omar von Muller, Uggie's trainer, confirming on national television that Jean Dujardin, who won the Academy Award for best actor, would no longer consent to co-star with any canines in future productions.

According to the Simon & Schuster, Uggie will not hold back in his memoir, which will chronicle the intimate details of his life and human family as told to his biographer Wendy Holden. The pooch, who is 10 years old now, was on the verge of being shipped to the pound as a pup to be put down when he was adopted by trainer, Omar von Muller, who steered him to a successful Hollywood career, including a role in the movie “Water for Elephants” and “The Artist” and, most recently, his signing on as a “spokesdog” for Nintendo.

Uggie will also dish about the celebrity wattage he has rubbed hind legs with, including George Clooney, Jessica Sipson, Kate Perry and “Water for Elephants” co-star  and “love of his life” Reese Witherspoon. This pooch with a past will also reveal his hidden demons and life as felon, including divulging details of his previously unknown crime, that he murdered a cat. We are also hoping he finally fesses up to another scandal, that he may have had two stunt doubles in “The Artist,” as well as addressing concerns about his health, which may have forced him into semi-retirement. This book will be a weeper.

Through Mr. Muller, Uggie has issued a statement from his home in Southern California: “It has been an exciting year of non-stop travel and red carpets since the film festival started and it will be a welcome break to sit with my co-writer Wendy Holden, and tell her of my adventures. I’m very pleased my devoted agent Alan Nevins, convinced me this was the next practical step in my career.”

Jennifer Bergstrom, Editor-in-Chief of Gallery books, said, “Uggie is the perfect author – not only does he have a scene-stealing personality and crowd-pleasing good looks, but he also knows how to sit, stay, and shake hands.”
