9/11 Ground Zero Memorial disrespected by visitors

As the 11th anniversary of the September 11 attacks approaches, family members of the victims would like to remind memorial visitors that the site is not an amusement park.

Family members are saying that disrespect at the National September 11 Memorial has reached an all-time high. The site has been open for a year.

The New York Post reported that people have been seen splashing themselves with water from the memorial’s two waterfalls during the summer, while others sit on bronze plaques bearing victims’ names. One relative said a tourist spilled coffee all over her son’s name.

First responder and head of the FDNY EMS Retirees Association Marianne Pizzitola said people were acting “like this was a park or playground.”

According to WPIX, Memorial spokesperson Michael Frazier said the site’s policy is to inform tourists that it's against the rules to lean on the bronze panels.

Signs calling for proper behavior are all around the memorial site, according to GMA News Online. One sign reads: "If you see anyone scratching, sitting on or otherwise damaging the names panel, please alert memorial staff." Back in June, visiting students threw trash into a black pool marking where the towers stood.

Kathy Bowden, sister of one of the victims seemed pleased that the mood at the site wasn’t somber. Bowden said, according to the Post, “I have always assumed that as time goes by, people will come there for gentle recreation — walking, sitting in the dappled sunshine, even picnicking, so I am rather surprised that anyone thinks this is not acceptable behavior.”

According to The Telegraph, 4.5 million people visited the 9/11 Memorial over its first year in operation. Construction of a 9/11 museum has been delayed due to funding issues. It had been expected to open this month, but it will take until at least 2014 to complete.

Well, just a few cops (regular or auxiliary) and perhaps a few firemen and paramedics in their dress uniforms, strategically placed, would add a note of solemnity, and they could discourage bad behavior. At the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas, a couple of (honorary or retired) Texas Rangers in uniform strategically placed maintains decorum just fine.

People will be people....what are you gonna do? Have a zillion behavior police enforcing a strict behavior code inside what looks like a park????? Families need to get a grip, move on, and stop taking things so personally. It is New York City...home of some of the most rude, arrogant and disrespectful people on the planet....it isn't like the memorial is in Mayberry R.F.D.......

Children can be conned out of inheritance after multiple marriages

BY CAROL ABAYA NEWJERSEYNEWSROOM.COM THE SANDWICH GENERATION Multiple marriages and blended families can mean children get cheated out of money and assets their parent(s) earned and had before the second or third marriage. At the 2012 senior citizens’ law day conference, Lawrence A. Friedman, Bridgewater elder law attorney, said elders need to protect their children of prior marriages from being disinherited. "Even if your spouse’s current will provides for your children, your spouse may change it after you pass away,” he said. In addition to protecting one's child, an appropriate will can minimize N.J. estate taxes, which kick in if assets are over $675,000. At the conference, Cathyanne Pisciotta from North Brunswick discussed guardianship which could be necessary if various legal documents are not signed. Pisciotta said that if a person does not have a durable power of attorney (for financial affairs) and a living will (for medical decisions), anyone else can seek guardianship of that person. An expensive court proceeding is mandatory. And she said, “If one person seeks guardianship, someone else can challenge the appointment. Another relative may seek to be appointed guardian because he/she wants the money and power.”
