The fallout from the arrest of a Farleigh Dickinson University professor charged with running online house of prostitution, Southwest Companions, continues to grow as New Mexico police announced the arrests of two people, including a college professor.
Police remain tight-lipped about the arrest of the school official, but plan to release more information at news conference scheduled for late Friday.
According to an article in the Albuquerque Journal, the arrest of F. Chris Garcia, formerly the president of the University of New Mexico is connected to David Flory's arrest last Sunday. Flory, a professor at Fairleigh Dickinson University, is charged with 40 counts of promoting prostitution, the Daily Record reported.
Police Lt. William Roseman said Garcia, whose username was "Burque Pops," attempted to delete his postings and other information linking him to the site. Garcia was allegedly apart of the sites "hunt club." His job was to seek out new prostitutes, the Deseret News reported.
Garcia is jailed at the Metropolitan Detention Center in lieu of $35,000 cash or surety bond for investigation of promoting prostitution, tampering with evidence and conspiracy. On Thursday, New Mexico Detectives executed search warrants at Garcia’s home and university office where he is employed as a professor, said Albuquerque Police Chief Ray Schultz. The skilled political expert served as vice president of academic affairs from 1987-90 and dean of the College of Arts and Sciences from 1980-86.Garcia was UNM’s first Hispanic president. His LinkedIn profile says the 71-year-old is a distinguished political science Professor Emeritus at UNM, and an accomplished author of such books as, "Hispanics and the US Political System" and "Moving into the Mainstream,” the Associated Press reported.
Also on Thursday, police arrested 28-year-old Cara Garrett on suspicion of bribery and intimidation of a witness. She allegedly threatened a woman who assisted the undercover police sting. Garrett started the site in 2005, and was the first person to allegedly tip vice officers about Southwest Companions after she was arrested on drug, child abuse and prostitution charges in December, the Deseret News reported.
Investigators are in the process of extraditing her from Roswell, where she was apprehended, back to Albuquerque. Garrett sold the site in 2007 to another suspect, Mike Dorsey, who then sold it to Professor Flory in 2009. Professor Flory left the Albuquerque county jail Wednesday after posting the $100,000 bond.
