An unauthorized biography of President Barack Obama by Edward Klein claims that Barack and Michelle Obama were on the verge of divorce in 2000, and states Michelle Obama even had divorce papers drawn up at the time.

The book “The Amateur: Barack Obama in the White House” was released this past Tuesday. Klein writes that Michelle Obama advised her husband not to run against incumbent Democratic Congressman Bobby Rush for his seat in the Chicago House of Representatives in 2000. Obama did run, and was defeated by a margin of 2-1.

According to the International Business Times, Klein wrote that Barack Obama was so depressed about it that some of his friends were concerned he may be suicidal.

Obama won a seat in the U.S. Senate in 2004, but Michelle Obama almost stopped that, according to book excerpts in the New York Post.

Northwestern University professor Steven Rogers said Obama told him, “My wife will not allow me to run for the Senate until I clear up the debts from my unsuccessful run for Congress.” Obama was still $8,000 in debt at that time, Rogers reportedly said.
