A letter from a former Marine regarding California Senator Dianne Feinstein’s proposed assault weapons ban has gone viral, and may have polarized both sides of gun control even further.

Ex-Marine Joshua Boston, 26, said he was a veteran of eight years in his letter posted December 27.

Boston said that Feinstein had overstepped her domain. He wrote, according to CNN iReport, “I will not register my weapons should this bill be passed, as I do not believe it is the government's right to know what I own. I am the man who keeps you free. I am not your servant. I am the person whom you serve. I am the flesh and blood of America. I am the man who fought for my country. I am an American.”

He said that current gun laws were sufficient. 'I own the guns I own because I acknowledge mankind's shortcomings instead of pretending they don't exist,” Boston said, according to iReport. “There are evil men in this world and there just may be a time when I need to do the unthinkable to protect me or my family.”

The Feinstein legislation looks to ban the sale of semi-automatic weapons, strengthen the Assault Weapons Ban from 1994, and tighten regulations for grandfathered weapons, according to The Huffington Post.

Boston responded on Wizbang, “Senator Feinstein regularly touts the effectiveness of the first Assault Weapons Ban while pointing out the “loopholes.” I’m sick of being told by people in Washington D.C. what is okay for me to own for my own personal defense while they enjoy the safety of many armed guards with better firearms than I have access to. It’s hypocritical.”

Feinstein’s office released a response to Boston’s letter, saying, according to CNN, "Senator Feinstein respects Cpl. Boston's service. She has said the legislation will be carefully focused to protect the rights of existing gun owners by exempting hundreds of weapons used for hunting and sporting purposes."

Boston told Wizbang the only gun restriction he supported was one in which “only VIOLENT felons are prevented from purchasing or possessing a firearm.”

Joshua Boston was honorably discharged from the U.S. Marines July 31.
