An amateur movie graphic showing the Manhattan skyline at sunset with "Al Qaeda" in bold type followed by "Coming Soon Again in New York" has run on some Arab language forums, causing concerns in the New York Police Department.
"Until we learn more about their origins, we take all threats against the city seriously," Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne said, according to ABC News. "The NYPD is investigating the origin and significance of the graphic."
The FBI was also investigating, but spokesman J. Peter Donald told CBS News there was "no specific or credible threat to New York at this time." Law enforcement sources say the site is based in Indonesia.
According to the New York Post, Browne believes a well-financed Egyptian, because of Arabic dialect used on the site, may have created the graphic.
The Washington Post reports that many of Al-Qaeda’s other main Internet forums have been disabled for over a week, possibly due to a cyber attack. These are usually launched by government-backed organizations or hackers.
U.S. intelligence officials have used al-Qaeda forums to gain knowledge through conversations among extremists. Government agencies have claimed no role in the sites going down.
When Osama Bin Laden was killed in May 2011, a statement with threats from Al-Qaeda was released on extremist websites by Al-Qaeda's online network, Al-Fajr Center, according to policymic.com.
The statement carried clear threats against the U.S., and said Al-Qaeda will continue to operate after Bin Laden’s death.
