Phone prank uncovers Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker’s strategy for dispute with unions

Here’s the score for this week’s contest between the prankster and the governor: 1-0.

For Wisconsin’s Republican Governor, Scott Walker — already embroiled in a state budget fight and a massive protest (still underway) by those whose collective bargaining strength he seeks to take away — the phone call did no good.

However, it was a surprising success for Ian Murphy, telephone prankster and editor of the liberal Buffalo, NY website, The Beast.

Without much trouble at all last Wednesday, Murphy managed to convince a number of people in Walker’s circle that he was David Koch, the billionaire conservative benefactor who had supported Walker’s run for governor — among other philosophically aligned causes. He was put through directly to Walker.

During their 20-minute conversation, Walker let slip elements of his strategy for tricking AWOL Democratic state senators into returning to the state and getting the vote he needs, and didn’t object when “Koch” called Democrats names.

Reactions to the phone conversation, which was posted by the Beast and quickly “went viral,” ranged from Rush Limbaugh’s assertion that Walker hadn’t said anything new so there was “no gotcha” involved, to Greg Sargent, who wrote in Washington Post.com that the incident will reinforce perceptions that Walker’s in way over his head, and to the Beast’s headline characterization of Walker as “Koch Whore.”

Walker’s phone comments confirmed the worst fears of union leaders in his state and dampened any trust its Democratic state senators may have felt. Madison’s mayor and police chief were reported to have ethics questions for the governor about the idea of adding “troublemakers” to the crowd of protesters. That, said city officials, could endanger on-duty police.

Internally, the main question was why it had been so easy for an imposter to reach the governor by phone. For now, that seems to be the least of the questions.

Meanwhile, the protest continued, approaching the two-week mark, with hundreds of participants spending the night in sleeping bags on the floor of the Capitol Rotunda. Their cause, now that money concessions they agreed to have not sufficed, is the governor’s apparent goal of union-busting.

Crushing or at least starving the unions in his state, Walker’s plan would take away the ability of state and local public employees to collectively bargain for working conditions, benefits or any benefits other than their base salaries, said an NPR report. Unions could not collect mandatory dues and would face a vote of the members every year to stay in existence.

This governor has been exposed as a crusader out to destroy unions, on the backs of teachers. I hope he fails miserably. This is not about fixing the budget. If working Americans don't start standing up for each other we will all fall together. This class warfare is evil.

Stuart,
I am a teacher, or in your words, servant. I am certainly not living off of you and am financially considered middle class. I have one of the most important careers in the world, yet am rarely looked at as even a servant, so thank you for the compliment. Each day I profoundly impact children, hoping to leave a positive, poignant footprint with them. A few life-lessons I hope they take from me is the importance of having compassion, not being ignorant, and adopting the habit of being humble, not pompous or almighty. You are welcome to join my 4th grade class for a bit of review...

Collective bargaining for civil servants is absurd from the beginning. Nobody has to work for government. Government employees are not the middle class. Government employees are our servants, by choice. If they don't like the salary/benefits offered, they are free to chose other lines of work...perhaps something which actually adds to the economy rather than living off of it. When private sector jobs are going away, and a large part of our nation is un or under employed, the very concept of the servants going on strike for...anything...is Orwellian at best. These guys already live off of us...whose resources are taken by force...and I simply cannot understand anybody supporting their right to collectively bargain for more.

this is proof that fascism is alive and well with a strong foothold in our government. this phone call illustrates clearly that walker is actually looking for koch for approval of what is happening in the wisconsin legislation. walker is looking for validation of his actions, which means he is answering to koch. koch is paying the governor for his services. this is pure fascism! wake up people!

This prank couldn't have been more timely. It just goes to show those who are caring to pay attention the overwhelming effort Walker will go to. WAKE UP WISCONSIN, WAKE UP NEW JERSEY.

Governor Scott Walker of Wisconsin is a mere pawn of Big Corporations

in their continuing strategy to their takeover of America. Eliminating
collective bargaining will effectively eliminate political
contributions to Democratic candidates who are more for holding on to
the Middle Class - something Big Corp is out to destroy. Unions are
the largest Democratic contributors.

When the Middle Class is gone there is no turning back, we effectively
become enslaved. Don't take my word for it, do some research! There is
overwhelming evidence, look for it.

They don't care what political philosophy you have. They want total
control and they will get if we don't stop them!
