REVIEW: Best shrug off ‘The Shaggs’

Director John Langs and his designers occasionally provide a few surreal touches that visually enliven the production, such as a strangely picturesque sequence in a supermarket and a seething drive home in the family car. But Langs and the writers never make us care about The Shaggs as individuals nor do they make a case for their dubious artistry. The pointless result is a glum affair that wastes everybody’s time.

“The Shaggs: Philosophy of the World” continues through July 3 at Playwrights Horizons, 416 W. 42nd St., New York. Call (212) 279-4200 or visit www.ticketcentral.com.
