REVIEW: 'Into the Woods' looks good in Central Park

An especially luminous Amy Adams shines brightly and sings sweetly as the resourceful Baker's Wife. Magnificent as usual in every way, Donna Murphy incisively commands the proceedings as the Witch. Jessie Mueller portrays with floating musicality Cinderella as a wide-eyed plain Jane. Sarah Stiles drolly invests Little Red Ridinghood with a dirty chuckle and a teenager's arrogance.

Denis O'Hare's dour interpretation of the ever-anxious Baker is borderline unpleasant, however, and Ivan Hernandez does not make the most of Cinderella's dashing but useless Prince. Hernandez is more notable as the Wolf whose creepy sexiness suggests a “Twilight” vampire. Noah Radcliffe does nicely as the boy Narrator while Chip Zien, who created the role of the Baker in 1987, returns ably and winningly as the Mysterious Man.

Sheader offers some fun surprises in his staging – the Giant's Wife materializes amid the tree tops as two enormous hands and a face assembled from various found objects – although he does not always use the forestage area effectively. With its reliance upon synchronized movement, Steel's so-so choreography seems very English. Music director Paul Gemignani provides a clear, crisp rendering of the score from his orchestra, which is hidden amidst the foliage.

“Into the Woods” continues through Sept. 1 at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park, New York. Tickets are free. Visit www.shakespeareinthepark.org.

Children can be conned out of inheritance after multiple marriages

BY CAROL ABAYA NEWJERSEYNEWSROOM.COM THE SANDWICH GENERATION Multiple marriages and blended families can mean children get cheated out of money and assets their parent(s) earned and had before the second or third marriage. At the 2012 senior citizens’ law day conference, Lawrence A. Friedman, Bridgewater elder law attorney, said elders need to protect their children of prior marriages from being disinherited. "Even if your spouse’s current will provides for your children, your spouse may change it after you pass away,” he said. In addition to protecting one's child, an appropriate will can minimize N.J. estate taxes, which kick in if assets are over $675,000. At the conference, Cathyanne Pisciotta from North Brunswick discussed guardianship which could be necessary if various legal documents are not signed. Pisciotta said that if a person does not have a durable power of attorney (for financial affairs) and a living will (for medical decisions), anyone else can seek guardianship of that person. An expensive court proceeding is mandatory. And she said, “If one person seeks guardianship, someone else can challenge the appointment. Another relative may seek to be appointed guardian because he/she wants the money and power.”
