One thing is being wild, but if recent reports are accurate, former major league reliever “Wild Thing” Mitch Williams is badly out of control.
After he was reported to be using profanities in an extended argument with an umpire in a youth tournament game in Maryland about a week ago, Williams is now facing new accusations.
Deadspin reported that according to coaches and parents, during a championship tournament game involving 10-year olds and under between the SJ Titans and Williams’ Jersey Wild, Williams was involved in another altercation. Witnesses say Williams called the Titans pitcher a p***y, and ordered his own pitcher to hit the opposing pitcher with a beanball.
According to Yahoo! Sports, Williams had a conference with his catcher before the inning in question, and the catcher relayed the message to his pitcher. The Jersey Wild pitcher then hit the Titans pitcher with his first pitch. The umpire, who reportedly warned ahead of time that a beanball might be coming, then warned both benches.
Williams said on Twitter that he did not curse at the umpire in the previous incident, but then apologized. But now the New York Daily News reports that the Major League Baseball analyst is taking a leave from that position. "Mitch Williams has decided to take a leave of absence from his role at MLB Network at this time," a Network spokesperson said. "We are continuing to look into the matter."
CBS Sports reported that a SJ Titans assistant coach said Williams told him about the alleged beanball after the game, "I told him to throw it inside."
