Jeremy Shockey’s disclosure that he wouldn’t mind returning to the Giants prompted a Twitter war between the tight end and one of his former teammates.
Shockey, who wore out his welcome in New York and was dealt to New Orleans after the 2007 season, has told the Super Bowl champions he’d like to return to the team that drafted him in the first round in 2002, according to the New York Daily News.
His on-field histrionics and off-field belly-aching during his six years as a Giant ended when he demanded a trade and refused to watch practice with other injured players at the start of camp in 2008.
That’s why former Giants mate Amani Toomer, as Yahoo!Sports reported, took to Twitter to tweak Shockey with this tweet:
“No!!Shockey ‘I will never play4 you again' he yelled at jerry Reese in 08. Let him keep his word. Bad teammate, worse person.”
Toomer was referring to the shouting match that reportedly took place between Shockey and Giants GM Jerry Reese that summer.
Shockey didn’t take long to respond to Toomer, posting on Twitter:
“Call me Jeremy only my friends call me by my last name! What do u have a book coming out pls keep my name out of your mouth.”
Meanwhile, the Giants haven’t ruled out bringing back Shockey. They signed free-agent tight end Martellus Bennett, formerly of Dallas, on Wednesday to a one-year deal worth $2.5 million. However, injuries to Jake Ballard and Travis Beckum — both of whom tore ACLs in the Giants’ 21-17 Super Bowl victory over the Patriots — leave the team a tight end short.
Shockey, 31, was cut last offseason after three years with the Saints and signed with the Panthers. His 37 receptions last season were a career-low.
