MMA fighter to enter cage while also battling cancer

Scott Fairlamb’s name may not be the most familiar name you come upon when you read the roster of the AMA Fight Club in Whippany, N.J. Fairlamb just made his MMA debut this past Sept. 24 in Atlantic City.

Not too many days after that fight, Fairlamb became incredibly sick. He was told by a doctor that blood work showed there was a 40 percent chance that he had leukemia, a type of cancer.

When Fairlamb fights again in New Jersey on April 22 in UCC 4, along with opponent Mo Fowzi, Fairlamb’s body will be facing its toughest battle — CML – Chronic Myeloid Leukemia.

“This is just another fight for me,” Fairlamb told NorthJersey.com. “I just put my mouthpiece in, put on my gloves and go beat the [heck] out of it."

Mycentraljersey.com reports that Fairlamb's friend and Rockaway native Billy Dee Williams made his MMA debut on the Cage Fury Fighting Championships card at Resorts Hotel Casino on Saturday in Atlantic City. Fairlamb was in his corner.

A teammate at AMA Fight Club, Williams donated his purse to help pay for Fairlamb's medical treatment. USA Today reports AMA owner Mike Constantino promised he would match Williams' donation.

Fairlamb, who has no health insurance, has been getting inspiration from a much smaller source — a 4-year-old girl named Delaney Brown, the daughter of former Butler High School football teammate Bobby Brown. Fighters.com reports Delaney Brown has been receiving intense treatments for neuroblastoma, a cancer that affects nervous systems in children.

Fairlamb said, “Here I am complaining about bone marrow biopsies and everything else, and this little girl didn’t have a care in the world. It was easy to be inspired by her.”

Mmadiehards.com reports that fans can see Scott’s fight against Mo Fowzi at UCC 4: Supremacy on April 22 at Mennen Sports Arena (161 East Hanover Ave., Morristown, N.J.).

Hi Scott,
Sorry to hear that you have Leukemia. I think you have a great positive outlook on getting through it. Keep It up.
I am 33 and I had Leukemia and survived a Miss Matched Bone Marrow Transplant in 1981. I also had a lot of radiation about as much as the Heroshema bomb gave off. I was treated at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in NYC by Dr. Richard O'Reilly. I have been cancer free from Leukemia since then. I remember a lot about being in the hospital and one thing I learned when I had my blood taken or a spinal tap done which I hated by the way. Was to be still cause if I moved the doctors would have to start all over again. I have had other cancers and survived them. The cancers were a cause from the radiation I had in 1981. "But I Thank God For All He Has Done For Me And Continues To Do Cause I Don't Think That I Could Of Gotten Through Those Times With Out Him. "
My Heart Goes Out To You And So Do My Thoughts And Prayers.
God Loves You And So Do I
