The Meadows Racetrack and Casino has announced that they will no longer require the services of Franco Harris at the present time, after the former Pittsburgh Steelers running back and Penn State star came out in support of fired coach Joe Paterno.
According to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, Harris said, “I feel that the board made a bad decision in letting Joe Paterno go. I thought they showed no courage. They were saying the football program under Joe was at fault.”
The Meadows statement said: "In light of recent developments with Franco Harris regarding Joe Paterno’s dismissal, Franco and The Meadows have mutually decided to put their business relationship on hold at this time."
Bloomberg reported that the Meadows is located about 160 miles from Penn State.
Harris, a Pro Football Hall of Fame member, played at Penn State for Paterno from 1969 to 1971. According to WTAE Pittsburgh, the 61-year old Harris will be meeting with Penn State University President Rodney Erickson and the Board of Trustees.
Harris and his Steelers teammate Rocky Bleier were hired by the Meadows in early October to help with various outreach activities, charitable events and public appearances, along with doing television advertisements.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Harris is one of many high-profile sports names listed as an honorary director of Jerry Sandusky’s Second Mile charity. Other names are Cal Ripken Jr., Arnold Palmer and Andy Reid.
