Rutgers head football coach Greg Schiano announced Monday the return of Phil Galiano and Randy Melvin to the Rutgers football program.
Galiano, who served on Schiano's staff from 2003-06, was named the team's tight ends coach while Melvin, who was the Scarlet Knights' defensive line coach from 2002-04, returns in the same capacity.
In total, Schiano brings back two assistant coaches with 38 combined years of coaching experience.
Galiano was the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for the previous three seasons at Florida International under former Schiano assistant Mario Cristobal. During his tenure with the Golden Panthers as defensive coordinator, Galiano mentored eight players who garnered All-Sun Belt honors. In his previous coaching stint at Rutgers, Galiano coached the defensive ends and linebackers.
Melvin, a 28-year coaching veteran, won a Super Bowl ring as the defensive line coach with the New England Patriots in 2001. In total, Melvin has spent six seasons coaching the defensive line in the NFL, including two seasons with the Patriots and four years with the Cleveland Browns (2005-08). Melvin most recently served as Temple's defensive line coach in 2009. Under his tutelage, defensive end Adrian Robinson totaled 12 sacks en route to being named the Mid-American Conference's Defensive Player of the Year.Rutgers, one of four teams in the nation to win four consecutive bowl games, begins spring practice March 23. The annual Scarlet-White spring football game is set for Saturday, April 24 at 3 p.m.
