San Francisco 49ers' kick returner Kyle Williams made two significant errors in the NFC Championship game against the Giant last Sunday.
First, he allowed a punt to bounce off his knee in the fourth quarter. The Giants would recover the ball, and Eli Manning would complete a touchdown pass to Mario Manningham.
Then, Williams fumbled another punt in overtime for the San Francisco 49ers that set up the Giants’ game-winning field goal.
Williams is accepting the responsibility for his mistakes and vows to move forward.
He said, according to the San Jose Mercury News, "You have to take full responsibility for it, which I do. I'll move through it. I promise you that."
SFGate.com asked Williams if he was trying to shift the ball from his right to his left when the fumble occurred, and he responded, “Yeah, I was just trying to get it into my right hand. He made a good play. He got his hand in there and poked it out.”
Williams said his teammates have been incredibly supportive. “They’ve let me know that they have my back,” he said. “They let me know it’s not all on me.”
Some crazed fans have not felt the same way. SFGate reports that Williams has been receiving hate mail and death threats on Twitter.
Some of them read: @KyleWilliams_10. I hope you, youre wife, kids and family die, you deserve it
@KyleWilliams_10 HOPE U RUN n2 A BULLET DA WAY U RAN INTO DAT BALL…
Jim Harbaugh, please give @KyleWilliams_10 the game ball. And make sure it explodes when he gets in his car.
Last year, San Francisco kicker David Akers missed field goals of 34 and 41 yards in a 21-16 playoff loss to Green Bay for the Philadelphia Eagles.
His coach at the time, Andy Reid said, according to SFGate.com, “We can all count. Those points would have helped.”
Akers said about Williams, “I say it in the truest way: We win as a team, we lose as a team. I think he’ll be back to do bigger and greater things.”
ESPN Chicago reported that Williams’ father, Chicago White Sox general manager Kenny Williams, questioned the "culture of sports" after the Twitter reports. He mentioned that Kyle was playing with an injured left shoulder Sunday, but said that his family does not make excuses nor do they blame the injury for Kyle’s fumbles.
