Ron Dayne was born in Virginia, grew up in New Jersey, and spent his college years in Wisconsin. He lives in Wisconsin now.
On Tuesday Dayne, a native of Berlin, became one of the newest members of the College Football Hall of Fame.
ESPN New York reported that Dayne attended Overbrook High School in Pine Hill, and then moved on to the University of Wisconsin. The tailback won the Heisman Trophy there in 1999, and set a school record by running for 6,397 yards. “It was a great time of my life,” Dayne said.
Overbrook’s athletic director Gary McGaurn said, according to philly.com, "We're very proud of Ron. He showed kids at Overbrook and all around here that if you worked hard and if you had talent and you didn't waste that talent, that you could become something.” Former Overbrook coach Harvey Miller added, “It can happen right here in Pine Hill."
Wisconsin Director of Athletics and Dayne’s former coach Barry Alvarez called Dayne the most dominant running back that ever played college football. "If the rules back then were the same as they are now, with bowl games counting towards his career rushing total, no one would even come close to touching his record,” Alvarez said, according to news8000.com.
Dayne became the first round draft pick of the New York Giants in 2000. According to ESPN New York, he rushed for 770 yards in helping lead the Giants into Super Bowl XXXV, a loss to the Baltimore Ravens. He played eight years in the NFL.
He now works with the Miller Brewing Company and the University of Wisconsin, and enjoys watching his two sons play football.
