Amazon gets ambitious: New Kindle, maybe a smartphone?

Reports have said that 400 million smartphones shipped in 2012’s first quarter. And according to sources, that busy market is about to get even more crowded.

Bloomberg.com has reported that Amazon.com is working on a smartphone that would compete with Apple’s line of iPhones and Google’s Android. Sources say Amazon is working with Foxconn of China on the units, and wants to add patents for wireless technology that would help it defend against copyright infringement allegations.

Android already has their own issues. They have been accused of sending out spam through infected phones. Google claimed that the spam messages came from PCs but were formatted to look like they came from Android smartphones.

The search engine’s representatives suggested that spammers are using infected computers and a fake mobile signature to bypass anti-spam mechanisms in their emails, according to the BBC. But computer security company Sophos could not determine that the formatting on the messages was faked.

Meanwhile, four of the new Amazon Kindle Fire tablets are expected to be manufactured in August or later this year, according to Computerworld. They include three 7 inch Kindle Fire 2 models and one 8.9 inch unit. Prices have not been revealed, but the new Google Nexus 7 will cost $199 when it goes on sale in a few weeks.

All Things D points out that Amazon has shown the knowledge to develop their own device. The company has its own app store, along with digital music and movies, and they’ve shown their ability to create hardware with Kindle and Kindle Fire. With the first Kindle, the company bought phone service wholesale from AT&T and Sprint and bundled it with its items.

Children can be conned out of inheritance after multiple marriages

BY CAROL ABAYA NEWJERSEYNEWSROOM.COM THE SANDWICH GENERATION Multiple marriages and blended families can mean children get cheated out of money and assets their parent(s) earned and had before the second or third marriage. At the 2012 senior citizens’ law day conference, Lawrence A. Friedman, Bridgewater elder law attorney, said elders need to protect their children of prior marriages from being disinherited. "Even if your spouse’s current will provides for your children, your spouse may change it after you pass away,” he said. In addition to protecting one's child, an appropriate will can minimize N.J. estate taxes, which kick in if assets are over $675,000. At the conference, Cathyanne Pisciotta from North Brunswick discussed guardianship which could be necessary if various legal documents are not signed. Pisciotta said that if a person does not have a durable power of attorney (for financial affairs) and a living will (for medical decisions), anyone else can seek guardianship of that person. An expensive court proceeding is mandatory. And she said, “If one person seeks guardianship, someone else can challenge the appointment. Another relative may seek to be appointed guardian because he/she wants the money and power.”
