Facebook has changed all of its users’ e-mail addresses to those ending in its @facebook.com system. That is, without informing customers of the change.
The social network started its own email service in November 2010 and called it a unified messaging service. The service was initially optional.
Then, in April, Facebook users were notified they were being assigned an @facebook.com email address. The company’s statement read, according to siliconrepublic.com, “As we announced back in April, we’ve been updating addresses on Facebook to make them consistent across our site. We’re also rolling out a new setting that gives people the choice to decide which addresses they want to show on their Timelines.”
Most users were not pleased with the move. Blogger Gervase Markham wrote, according to Forbes, “Facebook silently inserted themselves into the path of formerly-direct unencrypted communications from people who want to email me. What on earth do they think they are playing at?”
And security researcher Ashkan Soltani said it was “slightly fishy to auto-replace your default email address with ‘facebook.com’ without any user consent.”
