Microsoft has manufactured the software that operated many of the world’s personal computers during the 1980s and 1990s, but reports say they are considering expanding their horizons.
Unnamed sources are saying the company is expected to introduce its own tablet that will run a new version of Windows, the first time in the company’s 37-year-old history that it will have a computer containing its own hardware.
Microsoft hasn’t publicly revealed its plans yet, but All Things D reports the company has scheduled an event Monday in Los Angeles, promising a “major” announcement centering around Microsoft’s tablet strategy.
“If it’s true, it’s a major turning point for the company and shows just how breathtakingly the landscape has changed in a just a few years,” said former Microsoft executive Brad Silverberg, according to the New York Times. He also said he did not know the company’s plans.
The Wrap reports that manufacturers such as Samsung and Hewlett-Packard have made Microsoft tablets in the past. Sources say the new hardware would put Microsoft in direct competition with Apple’s iPads.
According to TIME.com, the Microsoft tablet will presumably run Windows RT, the version of Windows 8 that uses an ARM microprocessor.
Siliconrepublic.com reports that Samsung or Dell may have partnered with Microsoft in their tablet. The company has had huge success in hardware previously with its Xbox.
