The Coast Guard responded to a diesel oil spill in the Delaware River off Pennsauken Friday caused by a broken pipeline at a Hess Corp. facility.
Hess personnel contacted the Coast Guard in Philadelphia at 10:40 a.m. reporting an estimated 650 gallons of diesel oil had been spilled and at least 100 gallons went into the river. Most of the remaining oil has been contained in a ditch, the Coast Guard said.
The broken pipeline has been secured and a boom is currently deployed to contain the spill.
A Coast Guard pollution response team based in Philadelphia, along with members of the state Department of Environmental Protection, are on scene and investigating the incident .
A Miller Environmental cleanup crew is on scene, and the Coast Guard and DEP are monitoring the clean up.
"The Coast Guard utilized the early warning system, which quickly notifies water-front facilities with water intakes, to let them know an incident like this has happened and they can take the proper precautions," Coast Guard Lt. Drew Madjeska said.
