NASA has few words of comfort on the subject of unknown asteroids that could be heading toward earth.
It was only weeks ago that an asteroid estimated to be 55 feet in diameter exploded in the earth’s atmosphere over Russia, injuring 1,500 people and damaging property.
But what could we do if an object large enough to wipe out civilization came hurtling our way?
Probably nothing, NASA indicates, according to Yahoo News. NASA chief Charles Bolden told lawmakers at a U.S. House of Representatives Science Committee hearing on Tuesday that the only thing we could do in this case is pray.
According to msn.com, Bolden also noted that "the odds of a near-Earth object strike causing massive casualties and destruction of infrastructure are very small.”
While NASA is able to monitor about 95 percent of what would be dubbed “city-killer” asteroids, there is nothing that could be done if one was discovered with less than three weeks until impact.
Yahoo indicates that NASA hopes to build international relationships to improve monitoring efforts. They are also “looking at developing technologies to divert an object that may be on a collision course with Earth.”
So no, the asteroid-exploding technique seen in the 1998 film “Armageddon” might not be a reality just yet, but NASA is taking that sort of threat seriously.
