By Sunday night, nearly three million households in the mid-Atlantic and New England regions were without power as a freak October snowstorm gave the East a white Halloween it could have done without.

Some local officials have canceled or postponed Halloween affairs, calling the downed power lines and the potential for trees falling over unsafe for pedestrians according to seattlepi.com.

The Telegraph reports that 31 inches of snow fell in Jaffrey, New Hampshire, and locally, West Milford was hit with 19 inches. New Jersey Transit had to suspend service on several lines into New York Sunday, and there were some delays caused by wind at Newark International Airport.

PSE&G still had 145,000 customers without electricity at 9 a.m. this morning. County had 66,000, Essex had 46,500 and Passaic 10,900, according to NJ.com. PSE&G says over 70 percent who lost power have seen it return. Jersey Central Power & Light had 215,232 customers with no power at 8:00 a.m., and Atlantic City Electric still has over 2,300 customers with no electricity.

NJ.com reported that over 600,000 homes and businesses in the state lost their power by Sunday morning. Large branches and power lines fell over Saturday night due to the heavy snow and knocked out power to homes all over.

One of those belonged to Governor Christie, whose home in Morris County was without power from 4 p.m. Saturday until 7 p.m. Sunday. Overall in Morris County, 110,473 homes lost their power. Christie said from the perspective of the utilities, this storm turned out worse than the cleanup from Hurricane Irene from August.

As far as snowfall totals, Sparta in Sussex County received 16.8 inches, and Rockaway and Marcella in Morris County both got 16.4 inches.
