N.J. weather forecast: stormy, hot, and humid conditions continue

BY STEVEN DiMARTINO

A hazy, hot, humid, and stormy weather pattern is setting up for the Philadelphia and New York City metropolitan area and is not going away any time soon.

A cluster of thunderstorms from a passing disturbance move through the Philadelphia and New York City metropolitan area this morning with frequent lightning, wind gusts over 40 mph, small hail, and very heavy downpours. Clouds will give way this morning to hazy sunshine which will allow temperatures to skyrocket into the upper 80's to lower 90's along the coast and mid to upper 90's anyway from the coast. A few locations in the Philadelphia metropolitan area may actually push past 100 degrees. In addition to the oppressive heat, high levels of humidity will push the heat index into the 105 to 115 degrees.

Rinse and repeat will be the theme for the northern Mid Atlantic through this weekend and into next week as this weather pattern remains in place. While disturbances will keep the threat of thunderstorms in the forecast in the late evening and early morning hours, the main theme over the next several days through next Thursday will be the hazy, hot, and humid conditions. The thunderstorms will be capable of very heavy downpours, frequent lightning, and wind gusts over 40 mph. The thunderstorms will give way to hazy sun shine in the afternoon with temperatures rising into the upper 80's to lower 90's along the coast and mid 90's away from the coast through the period. A few locations may push into the upper 90's if clouds clear out fast enough. Temperatures in the morning will fall into the upper 60's to mid 70's for lows. The humidity will also remain high, leading to a constant heat index in the mid 90's to lower 100's through next week.

Children can be conned out of inheritance after multiple marriages

BY CAROL ABAYA NEWJERSEYNEWSROOM.COM THE SANDWICH GENERATION Multiple marriages and blended families can mean children get cheated out of money and assets their parent(s) earned and had before the second or third marriage. At the 2012 senior citizens’ law day conference, Lawrence A. Friedman, Bridgewater elder law attorney, said elders need to protect their children of prior marriages from being disinherited. "Even if your spouse’s current will provides for your children, your spouse may change it after you pass away,” he said. In addition to protecting one's child, an appropriate will can minimize N.J. estate taxes, which kick in if assets are over $675,000. At the conference, Cathyanne Pisciotta from North Brunswick discussed guardianship which could be necessary if various legal documents are not signed. Pisciotta said that if a person does not have a durable power of attorney (for financial affairs) and a living will (for medical decisions), anyone else can seek guardianship of that person. An expensive court proceeding is mandatory. And she said, “If one person seeks guardianship, someone else can challenge the appointment. Another relative may seek to be appointed guardian because he/she wants the money and power.”
