Popular opinion of the Nokia Lumia 900, the new Windows smartphone scheduled to go on sale April 8, is that it’s one of the company’s best models yet.
But it’s no iPhone.
PC World reports that the Nokia Lumia 900 has an important thing in its favor: its price. The 4G LTE smartphone costs only $100 with a two-year AT&T contract, about half the cost of the latest iPhone and almost a third of some 4G Androids.
According to Consumer Reports, the Lumia has a 4.3-inch ClearBlack AMOLED display, and an 8-megapixel camera with a front-facing 1.3 megapixel camera for video chatting. It comes in a blue or black matte-finish case, weighs 5.6 ounces, and the display is protected with a Gorilla Glass coating.
The Lumia 900 contains Mango OS Version 7.5, used in Windows 7. Its improvements include People Hub, which puts a user’s contacts, social-networking updates and interactions in one location, and Me, a feature that lets users post to any Facebook, Windows Live, LinkedIn, or Twitter accounts.
All Things D reports that the Lumia 900 offers three big advantages, a distinctive tile-based user interface; a mobile version of Xbox Live; and a mobile edition of Microsoft Office, where users can edit documents and share them or store them in the cloud.
The site did admit to being unimpressed with the 900’s photo quality and the life of its batteries.
According to the Washington Post, the Windows phone still has its limitations. They say it still offers significantly less apps than iOS or Androids, and its not all that strong at running more than one of them.
But most reviews are saying the Nokia Lumia 900 definitely a step in the right direction for Windows. For the many who are budget-minded, the price is a good start.
