The brown marmorated stink bug is anticipated to make quite a showing this fall in our homes and in fields of crops throughout the United States, most particularly in the mid-Atlantic states. The little stinkers release a foul odor when frightened or stepped on.
In the fall, the insects start looking for warmth and shelter, and will find places to nest inside homes. They pose no threat or risk of damage to homeowners, but they can wreak havoc on farmers’ crops. According to NBC News.com, they will eat anything that makes a seed or a fruit.
Stink bugs were unknown in the United States until about 15 years ago. Now they are in 38 states and the invasion continues. The current bumper crop of the bugs is probably due to the early spring, which allowed the bugs to reach maturity just in time for the fall weather.
Researchers are working on ways to trap them, including using a pheromone from the stink bug itself. You can go on www.stopstinkbugs.com if you find yourself with the creatures in your home and are looking for ways to get rid of them. The best defense is to make sure your house is well-sealed so they don’t enter in the first place.
