The Khan Academy says it wants to provide a free, world-class education to anyone who wants one.
Now they have taken the next step in accomplishing that goal by launching a free iPad app in the Apple store.
According to Fast Company, the app allows users to sync videos between devices with the need for an Internet connection, and includes interactive transcripts of lectures. The Khan Academy reaches over 4 million students every month.
The voice behind the Khan Academy lectures is Sal Khan. He was tutoring his cousin in algebra back in 2004, and posted tutorials on YouTube. People began to find his aids, and their popularity grew.
Khan told CBS News, “I started getting feedback... 'My child has dyslexia and this is the only thing that's getting to him.'” Khan finally quit his job as a hedge fund analyst and began to work full time offering non-profit educations.
According to the International Business Times, Khan Academy’s video lectures cover subjects like K-12 math, finance, history and physics. And the Academy uses what you’ve learned to put together charts and graphics that will illustrate a student’s progression.
Many schools have begun to employ the Khan Academy lectures, and people are beginning to wonder if Khan’s work will be the direction of education in the future. The iPad app could save a lot of schools affected by state budget cuts and students alike the costs of textbooks.
The Khan Academy website says that their resources are for everyone from students, faculty, adults returning to class after 20 years, or even friendly aliens. They claim to have delivered nearly 130,000,000 lessons across the world.
