McGreevey Believes Time Has Come For Same-Sex Marriage

BY ASHLEY GREGORY

James E. McGreevey, who resigned from the governorship in 2004 after admitting he had an affair with a gay lover,  believes it's only a matter of time before gay marriage is legal throughout the country.

“Gay marriage is going to happen,” McGreevey said on NBC’s Hardball on Wednesday.

McGreevey has statistics to back up his prediction. Society has changed since the former governor was in office. According to NBCnews.com, in 2004 54% Americans saw gay marriages as morally wrong, and the other 42% Americans accepted it. However, today those numbers have flipped.

Nine states legalizing same sex marriages and a few others allowing civil unions. McGreevey recognizes this change as he talked about how society saw homosexuality as a psychiatric disorder when he was a child, which essentially caused him to hide his sexuality.

“You were afraid to come out. Being in the closet for me was the only rational response at that time in my life,” he said.

McGreevey isn’t the only celebrity who has shown his support. Many artists, Beyonce, Madonna and Lance Bass have all demonstrated their support. Even President Barack Obama tweeted a picture quote supporting marriage equality.

McGreevey, like the others, believe every person should have the same rights as the other.

“We don’t want a less-than marriage. When you’re born, you get a birth certificate. When I die I get a death certificate. I don’t want the state to impart a less-than status in a union between two persons,” McGreevey said.
