New Jersey’s Division of Consumer Affairs began its “Safe Summer 2012” on Thursday when inspectors from New Jersey and Ocean County visited Seaside Heights and Seaside Park to ensure that their boardwalk games were being run honestly.
The investigators found violations with two game operators. One operator ran a basketball game with overinflated basketballs, which make it harder for players to score. Another operator underinflated his balloons at a dart-throwing game, which makes darts tend to bounce off them.
Attorney General Jeffery S. Chiesa said, according to the Asbury Park Press, “We can’t have one or two people undermine the integrity of all the honest people that are creating a great climate for families to come and visit.”
According to an Associated Press report from the Press of Atlantic City, investigator Martin Silva said a handful of violations were found, like games using software that was not certified in New Jersey. Violators receive a $250 fine.
The Associated Press reported that 15 violation notices were issued at each of the three boardwalks in 2011.
The Seaside Heights visit was announced in advance, and many game operators kept their game operations closed on Thursday.
Inspectors found other unrelated issues in their search. One stand was found to give away shiny bead necklaces containing lead in excess of federal guidelines. Two stores offered 15 novelty cigarette lighters that look like toys, which are illegal in New Jersey because of the risk of children starting fires with them.
Another store was found with 973 separate violations.
Investigations are expected to continue in Wildwood and Atlantic City.
