A case that carried on over two years ended this week when a disabled second grade teacher from the Paterson Public School District was fired for alleged inappropriate conduct.
Ron Tuitt, who had been teaching in the Paterson district since 1996, had been placed on administrative leave in November 2010 due to alleged incidents of urination in the classroom.
NorthJersey.com reported that Tuitt was accused of urinating into plastic bottles and having students flush them in the bathroom, and urinating into a classroom trash can. He also allegedly had students run errands for him, improperly drove students home and sent inappropriate emails to his students’ parents.
NBC New York reported that state Education Commissioner Christopher Cerf approved the removal of Tuitt’s tenure and allowed the district to fire him.
The judge’s ruling said that Tuitt’s conduct “was inappropriate and unprofessional and constitutes conduct unbecoming a teaching staff member,” CBS New York reported.
Tuitt gets around with a wheelchair because of a condition that causes swelling in his legs. Teachers union president Peter Tirri said Tuitt could work as a teacher, according to his doctors, if the school made certain accommodations for him, like giving him a classroom near an elevator.
Tirri said, according to NorthJersey.com, “One by one, the principal took away all the accommodations and made it more and more difficult for him to deal with his situation.’’
