Paterson Great Falls National Historic Park, the country’s 397th national park, will be dedicated Monday, the National Park Service announced Thursday.
The 35-acre park features the 77-foot Great Galls waterfall, the second largest in the East behind Niagara Falls in Western New York. The Great Falls was harnessed after the American Revolution to power new industries and played a key role in shaping the nation’s Industrial Revolution and building the U.S. economy.
A former state-run park, the site was designated as a National Historic Park by President Obama in March 2009. It was named a National Historic District in 1976. New Jersey has 13 national parks.
U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and National Park Service Director Jon Jarvis will head up the dedication at 9:30 a.m. at the 72 McBride Ave. Extension in Paterson.
They will be joined by U.S. Sen. Frank R. Lautenberg (D-N.J.) U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.), U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr., and Paterson Mayor Jeffrey Jones.
