Hemphill is accused of killing Keith Calhoun, who was shot after being approached at the corner of South Seventh Street and 12th Avenue around 2:30 a.m. on Monday. Calhoun was taken to University Hospital, suffering from a single gunshot wound, and was pronounced dead at 3:10 a.m.
During the investigation, detectives from the Essex County Prosecutor's Homicide Squad and the Newark Police Department's Homicide Squad developed information from witnesses and this morning arrested Hemphill at a relative's home located on Summit Avenue in Newark.
Hemphill has been charged with murder and weapons offenses. He is being held in the Essex County Jail in lieu of $500,000. Hemphill is expected to be arraigned next week before Essex County Superior Court Judge Peter J. Vazquez.Essex County Prosecutor Paula Dow and Newark Police Director Garry McCarthy commended detectives Jose Ramirez of the Essex County Prosecutor's Homicide Squad and Kevin Lassiter of the Newark Police Department's Homicide Squad for the investigation.
