Sea of blue for fallen Jersey City detective Marc DiNardo

There was blue sky above and a sea of blue below as thousands of officers lined the streets to honor one of their own in Jersey City on Friday. As the church bells tolled, fellow officers brought the flag-draped casket of Detective Marc A. DiNardo out of St. Aedan’s Church in McGinley Square after a solemn service.

The motorcade had 204 motorcycles and approximately 250 bagpipers played a final farewell for the service. It was reported he was part of Emerald Society.

Jersey City Detective Marc A. DiNardo died Tuesday morning as a result of being shot in the face by two suspects during an intense gun battle on July 16. He entered the Jersey City Medical Center in critical condition, was put on was on life support and declared brain dead. The shootout also injured four other officers. Three suffered bullet grazing and were immediately released. Police Officer Michael Camacho, who was also critically injured, is still recovering in the hospital.

Mayor Healy of Jersey City bestowed the medal of valor on Detective DiNardo.

Dressed in their Class A uniforms, well over 5,000 police officers attended the funeral. Fellow Jersey City Officer F. Maisonet commented, “there are not enough words to say how we feel. He was a great man and one of the fairest individuals I’ve ever worked with.”

Police officers traveled from as far away as Philadelphia, Connecticut and New York State. North Wildwood Lt Vicki Skill commented ,“it’s sad that we have to come together this way but this is what we do. Sadly it’s the only time we see people we went to academy with ,too.”

DiNardo was laid to rest at a Holy Cross cemetery in North Arlington ,New Jersey.

He is survived by his wife Mary and three young children Gwendolyn, 4, Marc Anthony, 2, and Ella, 1.

Brother officers quickly came to the aid of fellow Elizabeth officer who collapsed in the heat at the funeral for Detective DiNardo. They quickly carried him to receive assistance from Emergency Medical Service. His condition is unknown. (last picture)
