Two incidents involving motor vehicles claimed the lives of two men this weekend in Newark, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray announced today.
The first fatality occurred Saturday, June 25 near Madison and South 16th Streets when Danny Bynum, 43, was struck and killed by speeding car. According to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, 18-year-old Towanna Glanton was driving her Black Mazda at a high rate of speed when she hit Bynum. The suspect and passenger, Lashawna Cox, 22, were returning from a nightclub at the time of the 3:22 a.m. accident.
No charges were filed against Cox, but Glanton is charged with vehicular homicide and driving while intoxicated. Superior Court Judge Michael Ravin set Glanton's bond at $200,000.
Several hours later, Malik Mohammad, 49, was struck and killed by an unknown assailant near South Orange Avenue and South 11th Street. Results of the preliminary investigation indicate Mohammad was hit by a stolen pick up truck. Police have made no arrests in this incident, and the investigation continues.
“The number of pedestrians and motorists on our streets is increasing everyday; it is critical that we take proactive measures to prevent and reduce tragedies like these on our roadways. We will continue to reinforce the importance of pedestrians and strict enforcements on those drivers who violate the law,’’ said Acting Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio.
