A native of Morristown who is now homeless has just filed his 18th lawsuit since 1988. Richard Kreimer, 62, has basically made a career out of lawsuits.
The New York Post reports Kreimer has sued CVS pharmacy, a gourmet cheese shop and a New Jersey doctor, along with New Jersey municipalities of Morristown, Summit, Newark and Woodbury, alleging that mayors, state attorneys general, and police chiefs violated his civil rights by kicking him out of public places. Kreimer has earned about $400,000 from four settlements over the past 20 years.
Last month Kreimer filed his latest lawsuit against NJ Transit based on four separate encounters. One of four lawsuits against NJ Transit alleges an officer made him leave Newark’s Penn Station because of anti-loitering laws. The lawsuit also alleges the officer searched Kreimer and his belongings.
Kreimer was a regular visitor to the Morristown Library. In 1991, he won an $80,000 settlement from the library when he alleged they unlawfully barred him because of his hygiene and odd behavior. He also won a $150,000 settlement against Morristown alleging police harassment.
Kreimer is even willing to solicit his own publicity. The New York Times reported he telephoned one of their reporters in 2005, claiming to be a New Jersey Transit worker, saying that "Richard Kreimer was back." Kreimer’s maneuver set up negotiations between New Jersey Transit and the American Civil Liberties Union about treatment of homeless people.
