Florence attracts visitors with Hitler's toilet

While you’re getting your car serviced or your tires rotated at an auto repair shop in Florence, at the same time you can also also pay homage to one of the icons of history.

It turns out the toilet from Adolf Hitler’s private yacht, the Aviso Grille, landed in the auto repair garage located at 437 West 2nd Street in 1952.

According to Tablet Magazine, Dick Glass, a Hitler’s yacht expert from Florence said the nearly 500 foot long craft had a crew of 245 men and was armed. The deck of the Aviso Grille was where Hitler’s Grand Admiral Karl Dönitz first announced Hitler’s death on May 1, 1945.

The Aviso Grille wound up scrapped in the junkyard of New Jersey shipyard owner Harry Doan. Previous auto-shop owner Sam Carlani bought the toilet from Doan. Greg Kohfeldt bought the repair shop from Carlani 20 years ago.

The Hitler throne can be found in the back corner of Kohfeldt’s garage, and it isn’t in the best condition. “It exists," he summarized for Roadside America.  "I use it to go to the bathroom."

The garage owner called his throne "a working toilet."

"I'm not a good housekeeper," Kohfeldt said. "It's not pristine or anything." He also possesses a sink from the yacht, now in pieces.

Kohfeldt appears unimpressed with his tourist attraction, even though it receives a lot of visitors. He said he would give them up in a second if someone bought him a new bathroom to replace them, according to Time.

The Inquisitr reports that Hitler memorabilia from the Aviso Grille are scattered around Florence and nearby areas. The wood paneling from the ship now make up one man’s porch, a restaurant uses a table from the craft as a desk, and another man’s home now has a port window in one of its walls.
