epsteinjoe072509_optIt started as a hobby at the age of twelve, running around with an instamatic camera in hand, and now has evolved into a career as an award-winning photographer. My journey began prior to high school and became a life's pursuit during my years at Ithaca College where I earned a Bachelors Degree from the School of Communications with an emphasis in Photography.

Focusing first in the field of photojournalism, I worked in the newspaper field for more than 25 years, the last 18 for The Star-Ledger in Newark, N.J. My work has also been published in magazines, including Sports Illustrated, OT Week, OT Practice, and on the cover of Exceptional Parent, as well as books published by Prentice Hall and McGraw-Hill.

I volunteered with Special Olympics New Jersey for over 10 years as a coach and a photographer. During that time my photographs were used for publicity, put on award plaques and appeared on the cover of several limited edition boxes of General Mills' cereals; Team Cheerios, Golden Grahams and Wheaties.

I have won awards from New York Press Photographers Association, the New Jersey Press Association, New England Press Association and the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association and was part of the staff that won the Pulitzer Prize in 2005. My work has been displayed in local galleries and fine art shows throughout Metropolitan New York and I was recently commissioned for luxury residential development in New Jersey.

Capturing the image is only part of the process. The computer and memory card may have replaced the chemicals of the darkroom, but my ethics have not changed. I painstakingly edit each image, bringing to print what I viewed through the lens.

Over the years I have refined my technique and trained my eyes to see the world in a unique way. I hope my images go beyond the basics, displaying a vision blended of light, motion, and viewpoint.

In the few hours each week when I am not viewing the world through the viewfinder in my camera, you will find at home in Hoboken, NJ with my wife and son, capturing the moments of life.
