Even people who are “winning” all the time need an income. Reclusive unemployed actor Charlie Sheen has been hired to pitch products on Twitter.
Sheen has signed with Ad.ly, a Beverly Hills firm that writes messages from celebrities' Twitter or Facebook accounts to endorse products or brands. The celebrities are paid for each message.
On Thursday morning, Guinness World Records said on its Facebook page that Sheen was the fastest to ever hit 1 million followers on Twitter, which he did in 25 hours and 17 minutes.
The Los Angeles Times reports with Ad.ly, Sheen is joining a stable of more than 1,000 celebrities who include all three Kardashian sisters, Lamar Odom and Pau Gasol of the L.A. Lakers, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, former-boxer Mike Tyson, and musicians Linkin Park, Enrique Iglesias and 50 Cent.
The celebrities are paired with more than 150 brands for specific ad campaigns, including companies such as Sony, Microsoft, Old Navy, Coca-Cola, Pepsi and American Airlines.
Since the beginning of Sheen's rants a week ago, products including songs, T-shirts and coffee mugs, ring tones and even a radio station have been produced to capitalize on the mania around him.
According to Fox News, SiriusXM Radio announced Friday that it is rolling out "Tiger Blood Radio," a 24-hour limited run channel dedicated to Sheen. As a ratings booster, it says it will examine the news, facts and media frenzy surrounding the actor and his hit CBS series, "Two and a Half Men," which has been cancelled for at least the rest of the season.
And owners of Android phones have the ability to download sound boards of Sheen's quotes and set them as ring tones. The app is currently free.
CNN Money reports Sheen posted a photo of himself this week with one of his girlfriends, Rachel Oberlin. In the picture, Sheen was holding a bottle of chocolate milk from Broguiere's Farm Fresh Dairy in Montebello, Calif., and Oberlin was holding a bottle of Naked Juice.
Broguiere's dairy, a family-run business for more than 90 years, has been inundated with phone calls and media attention since the picture was posted, according to owner Ray Broguiere.
Broguiere said this isn't the first time that Sheen has been photographed while prominently displaying his product, which has even been featured on "Two and a-Half Men." But the attention to his product, which is available only in Los Angeles, really boomed after the Twitter post.
