It will be a day of "songs and sweets" as vegan cupcakery Sweet Avenue Bake Shop in Rutherford teams with area bands for the annual "Cupcakefest 2011," an all-day concert and festival on Saturday at Rutherford’s Lincoln Park Bandshell (176 Park Avenue).

A lineup of local bands will perform a variety of music, from alternative rock to ballads to acoustic to crunk, during the free concert, which encourages donations in support of the John A. Bukowski Shelter for Animals in Bloomfield. Pet supply donations will also be collected at the show, which runs from 1 to 7 p.m.

Taking the stage will be The Nico Blues, Those Mockinbirds, Gary Bender, The Front Bottoms, Brian LaPierre, Monday Night Bear Claw, Fairmont, and Bern & the Brights. These top up-and-coming bands have been seen on MTVU, featured on Kings of A&R, performed on tour with acts like The Spill Canvas and Butch Walker, and gained play on area radio stations.

“We feel strongly about our obligation to give a voice to those who have none,” says Danielle Vance, owner of Sweet Avenue and founder of Cupcakefest. “We started Cupcakefest to be able to use our influence in the community to help some of the countless animals in shelters across New Jersey.”

There's even a cupcake eating contest, in the tradition of "competitive eating" events, beginning at 4 p.m.

“Planet Verge is honored every year to join Sweet Avenue in the planning of Cupcakefest,” said Joelle Caputa, president of Planet Verge, an all-female-run, N.J.-based lifestyle blog and Internet TV show which is presenting the event along with Sweet Avenue. “Our staff is dedicated to raising awareness for important causes and feel it’s necessary for people to know that there are millions of amazing animals sitting in shelters right now, waiting to love you.”

According to event officials, John A. Bukowski Shelter for Animals was chosen this year due to the challenges the shelter has faced, including lack of funding and attempts to buy out the property.
