It was on our usual family bike ride, along the boardwalk from Bradley Beach to Asbury Park, that I spotted the "Happy Together Tour" poster outside the Paramount Theatre. I guess I got a bit emotional, as my husband and I jumped off our bikes and began singing verses, much to my son's chagrin, from a few songs of the groups performing in this upcoming 60's summer reunion: The Buckinghams (Kind of a Drag), The Grass Roots (Midnight Confession), The Turtles' (Elenore) featuring Flo and Eddie.
So, we decide we will go, our ten-year-old nonplussed son in tow, and make a night of it. Maybe hit the pinball museum first, right there on the boards, where, for ten dollars an hour, you can bang them pleasure machines all you want, or until that old carpal tunnel flares.
Not that I don't get emotional in general over any and all signs of the dusting off of this city. I guess I spent too many of my summer nights here, dodging through crowds with my North Jersey seasonal friends, scouting the best two rides I could purchase within my limited budget. Or trawling for that perfect vanilla custard soft ice cream with sprinkles, all the while amazed at the big city lights of Asbury Park. Such a difference from my small, provincial town of Bradley Beach. So, I suppose I'll be seeing my fellow dyed-to-the-roots baby boomers there, maybe some high school faces, but if all else fails, it will be a cultural event for my young son who may never again hear "She'd Rather Be With Me," performed live, among a group of aged hippies, swaying and clapping with abandon.
When: Friday, June 4th, 8 PM
Where: Paramount Theatre 1330 Ocean Avenue, Asbury Park, N.J. 07712, (732) 897-8810

And the sound system needs to be fixed! For the most part when the people were talking you had to listen real closely to understand them. Otherwise it was a GREAT TIME and the back up band WAS OUTSTANDING!
he wouldnt even have been there. Was not happy to pose for a pic, said "he was off work". well, Mickey - you've been off work for awhile, you should be thanking fans like us for keeping you going, not insulting us. Would it have been too much trouble to smile and be a little friendlier? I don't think so!
