"Jersey Shore" is welcoming a new cast member for the third season, the self-proclaimed "Bad Ass Brunette" Deena Nicole Cortese, 23, who actually hails from New Egypt, Ocean County.
Though it should have been an obvious requirement from the start, there is now a cast member on the MTV show Jersey Shore who is actually from the Shore area. Still no word on IQ testing.
The Asbury Park Press reports that the 23-year-old is a former cheerleader at Brookdale Community College in the Lincroft section of Middletown and a graduate from New Egypt High School.
Deena has been friends with "Jersey Shore" breakout star Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi for a couple of years, and Snooki helped her get cast for the show.
In a cached version of Cortese's MySpace page, which has since been taken down, as well as her Facebook page, Cortese says, "I'm a veryy (sic) fun person when you get to know me . . . But if I don't enjoy you . . . you'll know it . . . I'm not a fake person . . . theres (sic) no time for fake smiles . . . I'll just give you the cold shoulder . . . I speak whats on my mind and usually don't think before I say things . . . so sometimes it gets me into trouble."
Her profile on www.realitywanted.com, which was last updated in April, states she is a dental assistant, has no children, and is single.
But the New York Post reports that Cortese showed that she'll fit right in with the rest of her cast members by dropping the n-word in an online video. She told a friend on tape that she's fed up with men who hit on her and her pals simultaneously.
"And now we're gonna play you out, n - - -a! Do not try to play us!" she boasted in a 2008 video on her MySpace page, according to TMZ.com.
A leading black scholar cut Cortese some slack. "I don't think she meant it in a racialized context," said Jabari Asim, author of "The N Word: Who Can Say It, Who Shouldn't and Why." "I find her guilty of having a limited vocabulary, more than anything else," he said.
Cortese did not return calls about the video.
Yet according to nj.com, Deena's mother calls her a "sweetheart" who likes to have a good time. "She might not show it but she really cares about other people's feelings, she really does."
The second season of "Jersey Shore" begins airing July 29.
