As a young actress in her first major role, Taissa Farmiga has been through hell and back. Or at least her character has.
The 16-year-old New Jersey native plays Violet Harmon on “American Horror Story,” a horror-drama centered on a notorious murder house in Los Angeles. The show’s finale airs tonight at 10 p.m. EST on FX.
It what has proven to be a unique role, Farmiga’s character moves from Boston to Los Angeles with her parents (played by Connie Britton and Dylan McDermott) to discover there are deranged ghosts living in her house, her boyfriend, one of these ghosts, is a mass murdering psychopath who raped her mother, her baby half-brother may be the anti-Christ, and oh yeah….. she’s dead.
That small detail came to light in the episode, “Smoldering Children,” in which Violet sees her own corpse which her boyfriend Tate (Evan Peters), lovingly stowed away in a crawlspace under the house.
“I had to get a full head prosthetic, but I told them I didn't want to see it until we shot the actual take,” said Farmiga in an interview with TVGuide.com. “I was really psyching myself out beforehand, and the reaction you see is real.”
The role has been demanding, but Farmiga has been up to the challenge. She has also gotten to work alongside the legendary Jessica Lange in a show created by Brad Falchuk and Ryan Murphy.
AHS has scored big with audiences, and last week it was announced that it had received a Golden Globe nomination. Lange also got a nod in the Best Supporting Actress category as well as a Screen Actors Guild nomination.
AHS fans loyally tune in every week and eagerly turn to Facebook and elsewhere to share theories about what will happen next. Prior to the award nominations, E! Online reported that FX had ordered a second season. (We can assume Farmiga will be back…. right?)
And if you don’t watch this show, but you’re thinking Taissa Farmiga looks familiar, there are two reasons. First her older sister is Oscar-nominated actress (for “Up in the Air”) Vera Farmiga and there is a strong physical resemblance. And secondly, Taissa recently played a younger version of Vera in “Higher Ground,” which was also Vera’s directorial debut.
Los Angeles is certainly a long way from a tight-knit, Ukrainian upbringing in New Jersey.
According to a Telegraph interview with her sister Vera, Farmiga’s father is a computer analyst and her mother, a schoolteacher. There are seven children total in the family. Vera is the second oldest and is 21 years older than her baby sister Taissa, the youngest child in the family. It is reported that the family resides in Whitehouse Station.
