The debate on evolution vs. creationism has found its way into the House of Representatives.

On January 22, New Jersey Congressman Rush Holt proposed legislation that would make February 12 Darwin Day.

According to Examiner.com, the resolution says that evolution by natural selection provides a logical and compelling explanation for the diversity of life, and confirms that teaching of creationism in some schools compromises their academic and scientific integrity.

Representative Holt called Darwin “an amazingly creative man, according to Christian News Network. Holt’s resolution would recognize Darwin as a worthy symbol on which to “celebrate the achievements of reason, science, and the advancement of human knowledge.”

An opposing view comes from a Georgia congressman. Back in October, Paul Broun was speaking at Liberty Baptist Church in Georgia when he said, according to Christian News Network, “God’s word is true. All that stuff I was taught about evolution, embryology, the big bang theory is lies straight from the pit of Hell. And it’s lies to keep me and all the folks who are taught that from understanding that they need a savior.”

Broun added, “I don’t believe that Earth is but about 9,000 years old. I believe it was made in six days as we know them. That’s what the Bible tells us.”

Holt is a nuclear physicist by training, according to The New York Times. He said, “I hope we can hold hearings where people can hear about Darwin and science and the jobs it creates, and the lives it saves.”

The bill next goes before the Congressional Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. Darwin would have been 204 years old on February 12. Holt has not discussed the resolution with Broun.
