GOP Debate: Ron Paul and the Pandering 6

paulron061411_optBY MURRAY SABRIN
ANALYSIS

At the GOP presidential debate in New Hampshire on June 13th, the seven candidates gently sparred on most of the issues that have taken front and center in the campaign—jobs, Medicare, taxes, government spending, and military intervention. Rep. Michele Bachmann announced she would make her formal announcement for president soon.

Former New Mexico governor Gary Johnson, an announced candidate, was not invited by CNN to participate in the debate. With low poll numbers, CNN decided the two-term governor is not worthy to air his views, but the likes of Herman Cain, New Gingrich and Rich Santorum are worthy of having a national audience to pander to the GOP faithful.

And therein lies the tale of the CNN debate. All the candidates except Rep. Ron Paul made every effort to pander to the Religious Right, the military, seniors and others who will go the polls next year to select a GOP candidate to unseat President Obama. Particularly irritating were the responses from most of the candidates to a question from a Navy veteran who has three sons serving in the Navy. He asked the candidates should our troops be brought home from Afghanistan now that bin Laden is dead. All the candidates except Ron Paul began their response by thanking the questioner for his service to America and the sacrifice he and his three sons are making to the country.

Ron Paul said yes we should bring the troops home immediately, not engage in nation building and end the bombing of Pakistan and Yemen. He also criticized Obama’s Libyan policy. Rep. Paul’s finest moment came at the end of the debate when moderator John King asked him whom he would choose to work in his administration. Ron hesitated and then said I would have to quiz them about the Federal Reserve and military intervention. The audience gave him a large round of applause.

Nevertheless, the New York Times coverage of Ron Paul’s participation was “deep” in the story in a brief paragraph.

“Representative Ron Paul of Texas, enjoying newfound cachet because the Tea Party movement has taken well to his libertarianism, repeated his calls to end the Federal Reserve and cut military spending. But in that sense, he was a familiar presence.”

However, the photo accompanying the article shows about a dozen Ron Paul signs outside the auditorium where the debate was held.

Despite being the only candidate who did not pander to the audience or GOP voters, Rep. Paul did an admirable job at the debate. In fact, after the CNN debate, he was interviewed and he was at his best. He smiled often and came across as a “mainstream” candidate. I wish he were 10 years younger; he would look even better on television.

Mr. Paul has a strong ground game, early fund raisers, high profile legislative endorsements, GOP fellow candidates who literally are echoing Mr. Ron Paul's stead fast platform, supporters not only from 1 "party related team" but supporters who are democratic, libertarian, republican, and all others. Most importantly, all those people who feel kind of "snowed over" by all the failed campaign promises of Mr. Obama, realize now that ideology and rhetoric never supersedes substance and track record. Walk the walk and talk the talk. Mr. Ron Paul does just that.

We will always need a "Dr. No" in the White house to say "no" to unconstitutional expansionist bills that violate the 9&10th of the Bill of Rights and to say "no" to generals when they ask "Should we remain in these wars and start new ones?"

Lives and fortunes are on the line.

the more debates the better, for ron paul and america as a whole-every time these liars open their mouths to speak it just makes ron paul look that much better-i welcome questions to active military because it brings out the pandering each time and these so called front runners show their true colors-yes, there are still large numbers of voters who will still fall for this pandering crap but there is also a huge number of younger voters who are awake and sick and tired of business as usual, this plays right into ron paul`s hands, america`s hands actually, because ron will tell you, unlike the other candidates this isn`t about ron paul-talk about real change you can believe in....

Thank you for your well written article. I like to read the comments attached to the Ron Paul articles.

I'm always amazed at how articulate and polite the followers of Ron Paul are compared to those that support other candidates.

Ron Paul fans are willing to listen, and debate the issues. Unlike others who usually resort to name calling, or baseless attacks.

I urge everyone to use your own personal realm of influence, and tell someone you know about Ron Paul, and then tell someone else.

This way we can create an informed electorate who will actually vote for what is right, and not what is 'sold' to us.
Thanks for reading!

Ron Paul was the only one who spoke of what things the president has the power to do under the constitution, vs what is actually the role of the congress. It is time for a president who understands the constitution and will not try and expand the role of the separate branches of government

Like Ron Paul. But as we know, that would be out the window before the driver hit the main road, if they were elected. I don't care how old he looks. All we need is 4 years to get the ball rolling and then bring in his VP to clean up. Of course 8 would be sweet!

If Ron Paul is elected, you suggest he will be the only one standing up for the Constitution and thus will be ineffective given that Congress is not as honest and not devoted to limited Constitutional government as Ron Paul is. However, why would we want a President other than Ron Paul, why would we want someone who is dishonest, who is sold out to the special interests, and who is willing to continue to use the Constitution as a doormat? As President, Ron Paul can use his bully-pulpit to educate the public, and the public once educated can pressure Congress to make the changes necessary to turn the country around and headed in the right direction. Even without any Congressional support, President Paul can do many things to change the country for the better. As Commander In Chief, he can unilaterally order the withdrawal of US forces from Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, and 140 or more US military bases situated in foreign countries. That alone will save hundreds of billions of dollars per year. In addition, he can veto all unconstitutional bills from Congress, pressuring Congress to change the bills to make them more Constitutional and in accordance with reducing the size, scope, and cost of the federal government. There is far more that the President can do all on his own. We need a strong leader who cares about the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, ESPECIALLY since he will have to stand strong against the rest of the corrupt government that does not follow the Constitution.

Ron Paul is the only candidate who actually wants to serve the people, instead of thinking about political office as a way to get rich.
Some people say he is old, but to me it looks like Gandolph got a hair cut and a shave. He's just dynamic. He's certainly the wisest of the bunch. The establishment politicians are a bunch of Wormtongues and Sarumans...

I am a Conservative Republican. I voted in the past for men like Dole, Bush and McCain. I even enjoyed meeting Gingrich personally during the 90s (he gve me a autographed copy of his Quotations from Speaker Newt. NOW after the debates yesterday evening I have decided that Representative Paul of Texas has an extraordinary grasp of the perils our nation is facing today. Therefore after much consideration of the cadidates + I have chosen to support Ron Paul in 2012.

I've never seen all the Main Media outlets work as hard as they are to dismiss Ron Paul. CNN did not even mention Ron Paul in todays article about the winners and losers of last nights debate.
I'm glad my friend told me about Ron Paul in 2008. I voted for Huckabee and would have changed my vote to Paul in a heartbeat. Thank goodness for sites like YouTube and articles like this where you can research and make your own decision without being told how to think.

With the exception of Ron Paul the rest of these characters have no military experience, a flippity floppity voting record on no voting record at all. Ron Paul is the only candidate who has 30 years of a consistent, unwavering record of voting for the best interests of the American people. The ONLY candidate with an honest and very clear record. The rest of these hosers are bought and paid for by big business and their lobbyists. Why would we even want to consider these other slick talking, overly confidence, loudmouth panderers?

As an active and vocal member of the Libertarian Party and a native Houstonian, I have always admired and supported Dr. Ronald Paul. I met Gary Johnson at a NORML Convention as well and was also impressed with him. It's horrible that CNN wouldn't let him in on the debate. I would have enjoyed hearing Johnson and Paul getting down to the nitty gritty about where they disagreed on philosophy, politics, and policy. I would love to see Ron Paul win the Republican nomination and watch as he verbally strips President Obama down to the core important issues (i.e. role of government) so the nation could once and for all see how much of a danger the Obama administration is to this country.

Did anyone else get tired of his constant...ummm...ummm..ummm during ever question.

They need to give every debater equal time on a timer with a buzzer just like chess. Answer the question and hit your buzzer. When you run out of time, you are done for the debate.

You know these people are generally liars (with the exception of possibly Bachman) and will say one thing to get elected and do the complete opposite once in office. Ron Paul is the only one up there that has a 30+ year proven track record of not varying from his principles in the slightest. He sticks to his guns even if he's the only man standing by principle. I truly believe this man would do it even if his own personal safety or that of his family was threatened. He is the modern day brave-heart equivalent.

It was one of the rare reports on the debate. CNN's format was atrocious & as usual, Ron got the least time, when he was the only one with a lot to say.

Here's the deal: Obama is driving this country into the grave. The only way to defeat him is for the GOP to have a candidate that disenchanted democrats, doves, libertarians, and conservatives, as well as republicans will support. There's only ONE man who can draw those voters - RON PAUL. The press, the "political insiders," and the sheeple just can't get it.

As a college student I find it easier to filter the nonsense and bullshit that the corporate media wants us to believe. Ron Paul is the best chance we'll ever haver to someone that truely cares for this countries well-being. Al the other canidates do and say just what they need to get elected and then will be manipulated and puppeted. Ron Paul once again to the point with REAL plans and Real knowledge. RON PAUL 2012!!

Thanks for the positive article about Ron - Murray.

Of course I knew that you would write something with veracity. Ron as usual was the only person on the stage of idiots who has knowledge, wisdom and common sense.

As bad as the questions were, as bad as the moderator was and as bad as the circus like atmosphere was - Ron managed to shine once more - and for those with eyes to see and ears to hear - he was a delight.

I watch the debates only because he is in them. Period.

God Bless this beautiful man.

not Ron Paul
Ron Paul isn't getting marginalized just by CNN. He gets the same treatment by his own party and other media sources. So if the GOP doesn't support him, the media (who, like it or not, forms way too many opinions in this country) doesn't support him, and the Democrats will mostly not support him - how effective would he be if elected? Wouldn't both parties work against his administration, mess with approving his cabinet and judicial appointments, and drag their heels on his initiatives, especially the ones that take on the institutional wealth and power that is corrupting our government?

I've seen several people over the years that might make a good president, but there are other branches of government that can interfere if they choose to (Congress vs. Obama, for ex.) and keep an administration's agendas from being implemented. A Ron Paul presidency would be a constant uphill battle with entrenched establishment forces IMO.

This is a nice article. I was at the airport last night but my wife stayed home and watched on WMUR and she said that the DNC was running ads during the breaks that said the GOP is coming for your medicare.

I think herein lies the crux of the problem with Paul. He's the only candidate up there that I can vote for, for obvious reasons, but I'm young. RP supporters are young and hip. They don't watch CBS-produced pentagon propoganda 14-18 hours a day like a lot of the geriatric GOP. RP sounds scary to these old people because he's telling the truth, but the pentagon spins it so that it appears that not only is he dangerous foreign policy-wise, but he's dangerous domestically because he'll cut the federal government in half.

To hell with my grandkids! If RP gets elected I won't get a free scooter and viagra from the fed! You have to remember that the generation watching TV and participating in these polls are my parent's generation. The children of my grandparents who grew up in the depression and then went to WWII to save the world so that thier kids, the ones who dodged the vietnam war draft so they could hang out and do LSD and have promiscuous sex (giving us the rampant STD problems of today). This 60's and 70's generation are the most selfish, banal, innane, and nation-cidal group ever.

Why do you think these TV polls aren't anything close to an internet poll?

Just after the Navy dad asked his question and the "other 6" pandered away, I went to twitter and said this very thing; in 140 characters. I served 8 years in the Army and the last thing I need is politicians thanking me in a scripted format. You go fight the wars or send YOUR children. Ron Paul stands out from all these other candidates simply because he's got logic and truth on his side. His voting records show he is on Liberty's side.

All the candidates dancing around the question of bringing the troops home by giving this long winded kiss up speech about "thanking them for their sacrifice to keep us safe" was tiring, evasive, time wasing and made me want to throw up (All they're doing is trying safe face and still trying to justify the war they started and out-holyier-than-thou each other by kissing up to the men who fight and die in it)

Ron Paul answered questions directly, honestly and constitutionally.

I was particularly struck by the ridiculousness of Herman Cain's assertions on his TARP position.

He was **FOR** TARP, but he didn't know it was going to be used to "pick winners and losers."

He's supposedly this business magnate, and he was on the board of directors for the Kansas City Fed, yet he didn't know TARP would be used to pick winners and losers.

I would like to take this opportunity to nominate Herman Cain as "Idiot Poser of the Year."

I don't need or want a President that uses Skillful Ploys and Masterful plans to look good at a debate!! I choose Ron Paul because his talking points are always about the REAL issues. Last night was a cartoon with the type of Q's being asked and as soon as a candidate tries to answer they’re immediately getting cut off by the moderator (sorry there's no time). Ron Paul seamed cool, calm and collected. He seemed confidant, sharp and well versed in all issues. Notice Ron Paul was the only one who actually answered the questions with what he would do as president. As the others used this opportunity take stabs at Obama, or make announcements to steal the spotlight or divert attention from the real issues. And what about "This and That"? What kind of joke was that? How am I getting to know my president by asking him if he likes dancing with the Stars or American Idol??? Then Bachmann takes the bait and uses it to make a funny at the end..."Ah maybe we need an American Idol type vote....let's ask the Audience" lolololololol. This is a circus show guys!!!! The only man that is in it to win is Ron Paul because he stays on point and he’s well versed therefore no need for meticulously thought out schemes of how we can get the attention of the voters. Truth and Liberty will prevail as people see that Ron Paul is our man!! He is the boss, he tells our Generals what to do and he is bringing our Troops home!

Ron Paul is the only candidate that will end all the wars. Both Republicans and Democrats support endless Wars for Israel, it all started nearly a decade ago under a false flag attack.

Ron Paul & Gary Johnson are the only two people on the Democrat or Republican tickets who I trust will actually end the ridiculous, costly & counter-productive US occupation of MENA. With the exception of Bauchman who was forceful on Libya, the other candidates talk the end of the war talk, but we all know they walk a much different walk- especially when AIPAC or the military lobby is meeting with them behind closed doors. I'm encouraged to see a tone change with the so-called "mainstream" candidates on withdrawal and topic actually comes up in debate (it was a non item in 2010 much to my chagrin), but I'm fairly certain Romney et al don't really mean it. Listening to the generals is another nonsensical way of saying they'll never leave. As for Obama, he has completely lost credibility with the voters on this issue.

Excellent article! However, if you want to advance in the Mainstream Media Machine, you have to stop reporting accurately on Ron Paul and follow the MONEY PARTY line that he is:
A. 'Unelectable' (whatever that means)
B. 'Fringe' (despite his positions being favored by the majority of the American People, and indeed being 'adopted' or at least being mouthed- by ALL the other candidates) )
C. 'Dull, lackluster, etc.' (despite his having the best crowd reaction at the debates and the best one-liners)
and, finally...
D. 'Out of the Mainstream' (which is curious, since sound money, a healthy economy and an end to destructive and endless wars are all favored by an overwhelming majority of the American electorate).

I hope that was helpful! Now grab your thesaurus and poison pen and try to go along with the partisan hacks and bought-and-paid-for corporate shills who have been trying (unsuccessfully) to shut the good Doctor up for two election cycles running!

I watched the debate last night, and that was also my reaction: the rest of the candidates pandering as typical politicians do, while Ron Paul stood up for the principles of liberty, and against continued militarism and corporatism. He has my vote.

Good article. I agree - a good next step would be to get the other candidates' position on cutting the size of government.

I know what Cain would say "One, you have to analyze the problem...."

And Romney would suggest that "You talk to the heads of these departments, talk to your lawyers..."

Anyway, another thing I would like to see is a comparison of Romney from four years ago and now - because everyone is sounding more and more like Paul.
