'Colbert Report' tries to become local

GOP Senate candidate Christine O'Donnell's announced last week that she would no longer do interviews with national media outlets. So that left her press coverage to local Delaware news gatherers.
And one new Delaware press corps member, if only for a few minutes: Montclair, New Jersey's own Stephen Colbert.
On Monday night's "Colbert Report," the comedian changed the name of his faux news show to "The Delawert Report" in reaction to O'Donnell's announcement. At least for one segment.
In a satirical attempt to get her on his show, Colbert transformed his program into a public access-looking, Delaware-based talk show "just for the people of the Blue Hen state."
"Delaware, we're all up in arms about the proposed business and medical complex on Plantation Road in Suffolk County," Colbert said. Well, he was close to saying Sussex County.Colbert was referring to two office complexes which have been approved by Sussex County officials along the road, with a third project pending. The Delaware News Journal reports that some residents are upset about the increase in traffic they say will be coming.
Colbert then did a Delaware version of his ongoing bit called "The Word," using a dry erase board instead of his normal flashy graphics.
"Folks, this new construction is going to snarl traffic along the Coastal Highway 1. Why not just redirect them through the Heritage Inn Golf Course?" Colbert asked, name-dropping an actual hotel golf course on Del. 1 near Lewes.
According to the Courier Post, Colbert ended with his best pitch to get O'Donnell, a Moorestown High School graduate, on his show: "So, Christine O'Donnell, come on 'The Delawert Report' and I promise to toss you so many softballs that your opponents will accuse you of being a lesbian."
Meanwhile, O'Donnell's latest statement found from the 1990's was released by comedian Bill Maher on Friday night.
The New York Daily News reports O'Donnell had appeared as a conservative Christian activist and was a frequent guest on his "Politically Incorrect" show. Maher replayed the segment on his HBO show "Real Time."
On the Oct. 15, 1998 clip, O'Donnell challenged the theory of evolution.
"Evolution is a myth," she said, starting to elaborate before Maher interrupted.
"Evolution is a myth?" he asked. "Have you ever looked at a monkey?"
"Well then why aren't they, why aren't monkeys still evolving into humans?," O'Donnell countered.
Maybe Stephen Colbert can answer that one. But O'Donnell's campaign has not yet responded to Colbert's invitation.
