A trip to the West Coast, PAC-10 a perfect 12-0 to start

By Adam Helfgott

As the college basketball season gets underway, it looks like the PAC-10 is having one of the best starts for any conference so far. The league is 12-0, with Cal and Arizona State looking to join in on the winning action tonight.

No team has faced a tough opponent yet. But the Sun Devils will be tested tonight when they face the Lobos of New Mexico at the Pit.

Let’s take a trip to the West Coast and visit our PAC-10 Conference links.

1. Oregon (2-0)

New Oregon Head Coach Dana Altman has started off on the right foot. His Oregon Ducks won the BTI Tournament this past weekend with three opening wins against North Dakota State, Denver and UC Santa Barbara.

Patrick Malee of the Daily Emerald has the recap from a strong opening weekend for the Ducks.

2. UCLA (2-0)

Ben Howland’s Bruins have started off this year by winning both of their opening games against Cal State Northridge and Pepperdine.

The Bruins are getting good production from several players like Sophomores Reeves Nelson and Tyler Honeycutt. Sophomore Brendan Lane and Freshman Josh Smith are leading the way in rebounds for UCLA.

The Bruins hosts Pacific tonight in the second round of the NIT Season Tip-Off at Pauley Pavilion but will be without shooting guards Malcolm Lee and Matt Carlino. With only eight players available tonight, will UCLA have enough to beat Pacific?

3. USC (2-0)

USC Head Coach Kevin O’Neill’s Trojans opened up with two easy victories over UC-Irvine and Santa Clara to start the season.

Nikola Vucevic recorded a double-double in the win against UC-Irvine.

While, freshman point guard Maurice Jones led the way against Santa Clara, scoring 29 points.

4. Arizona (1-0)

Sean Miller’s Wildcats used tough defense and hot shooting to blast Idaho State 90-42 in its opening game.

As Kevin Zimmerman of the Arizona Daily Wildcat writes, Coach Miller is expecting great production from his bench this season just like the 43-point output in game one.

5. Oregon State (1-0)

The Beavers got off to a good start when Omari Johnson scored 15 points and Ahmad Starks added 14 in his collegiate debut to help Oregon State to a 71-56 home victory over Texas-Arlington on Sunday.

But Coach Craig Robinson has more to look forward to as 6-10 center Daniel Gomis of Senegal signed his letter of intent to play for the Beavers next season. This year he will play at the prestigious Oak Hill Academy.

6. Stanford (1-0)

Head Coach Johhny Dawkins’ young squad got out to a quick lead in their opening game against San Diego and earned a 64-48 win at Maples Pavilion on Monday Night.

7. Washington (1-0)

Huskies Head Coach Lorenzo Romar could sit back and relax in the Huskies opening game. Senior forward Matthew Bryan-Amaning scored a career-high 28 points and pulled down 13 rebounds to lead Washington to a win over McNeese State, 118-64.

The Huskies have another cupcake tonight as Eastern Washington visits Washington before the team heads out to Maui.

8. Washington State (1-0)

Ken Bone’s Cougars came out strong in their opening game against Southrern University as Washington State opened a 41-18 lead at half, and never looked back.

But now it’s time for a good old fashion border war, that’s right, we are talking about Washington State and Idaho. Apples vs. Potatoes tonight, What could be better?

9. Cal (0-0)

The Golden Bears open its season tonight against Cal Northridge and no one knows what to expect from this year’s squad, not even head coach Mike Montgomery.

10. Arizona State (0-0)

Talk about upping an out of conference schedule. Coach Herb Sendek and the Sun Devils travel to Albuquerque and the Pit to take on New Mexico in the season opener. ASU will be going against the two-time defending Mountain West champion in one of the most hostile environments in the nation. The Pit recently endured a $60 million facelift to enhance the crazy atmosphere for the Lobos.
