Can Savon save Rutgers and finally get Greg Schiano to a BCS game? He better hurry, TCU is coming soon.
So it’s the day after National Signing Day for colleges and well, not all players are signed. No doubt, that’s confusing, and still two of the top three rated players managed not to pick a school.
Consensus No. 1 prospect Jadeveon Clowney went the Terrelle Pryor route and chose to commit to … nobody.
Meanwhile, five-star offensive lineman Cyrus Kouandijo kind-of-sort-of-but-not-really committed to Auburn. But he may still go to Alabama … and my head hurts too so read about it here.
This guy used a puppy dog in his decision. Why again do we let 18-year-old kids hold LeBron James: The Decision-style press conferences to tell the world where they are going to play college football?
It gets better. Looks like mom and son disagreed as to where he should attend college.
And Ohio State really did its homework on this dummy?
Now in all seriousness, recruiting is the one shining hope for many programs. Like the NFL Draft, it signals the start of the new season and hope springs eternal for everybody.
So here are the top 10 classes as ranked by ESPN and Rivals.
ESPN: Rivals:
1. Florida State Alabama
2. Alabama Florida State
3. Auburn Texas
4. USC USC
5. Texas Georgia
6. Georgia LSU
7. Ohio State Auburn
8. Clemson Clemson
9. Notre Dame Oregon
10. LSU Notre Dame
And here are the Big East rankings from both services (purple palm-palms not included):
ESPN Rivals:
1. Louisville Louisville
2. Rutgers Rutgers
3. West Virginia West Virginia
4. Syracuse Cincinnati
5. South Florida Pittsburgh
6. Cincinnati South Florida
7. Pittsburgh Syracuse
8. Connecticut Connecticut
Analysis: Good job by both Louisville and Rutgers to land top-32 classes according to Rivals. Charlie Strong has done a nice job reviving the Cardinals after Bobby Petrino — shockingly — bailed and Steve Kragthorpe drug them through the gutter. For Greg Schiano, he got his man in running back Savon Huggins. People are already talking about this kid being the next Ray Rice and that Rice is pretty darn good.
Quick tangent: It was a really bad NFL playoffs for former Scarlet Knights. Rice had the game-changing fumble in the Ravens’ loss to the Steelers. Devin McCourty got outmuscled by Braylon Edwards for a touchdown and Jamaal Westerman committed a costly roughing the punter penalty that allowed Pittsburgh to swing field position. Better luck next year boys.
Also, this is the first time Rutgers has ever landed the top recruit in the state of New Jersey. Base on history, this is good. Former top N.J. recruits include Eugene Monroe (Plainfield HS) now with Jacksonville and Myron Rolle (The Hun School) now with Tennessee. Both were profiled, along with this year’s top recruit — the still uncommitted Clowney — in ESPN the Magazine’s February issue. Here’s what Monroe said in the mag about being the No. 1 overall prospect: “Being ranked No. 1 didn’t mean a thing to me, but it did to my mother and the rest of my family and friends. You should have heard the way they said it, with such pride. My brother, Scott, walked around town telling everyone his brother was No. 1 in the nation. Seeing my family and friends enjoy it — that was the best part.”
However, the best answer came from Jets running back Joe McKnight, who admitted he didn’t know he was the No.1 recruit and thought it was Jimmy Clausen. “You made my day,” he said. The Mag also does a good job of profiling the recruiting process in general (disclaimer: it’s slimy).
I’ve added two more Huggins photos just for ScarletNation.
