Shortly after Jose Bautista homered Monday off Met phenom Noah Syndergaard and closer Jeurys Familia, ironically I saw the Blue Jay slugger’s LinkedIn profile randomly turn up on the web.
It’s surprising a two-time American League homerun champ is on LinkedIn. Bautista’s profile simply says, “MLB Player, Toronto Blue Jays.” No mention of his skills, probably because they’re quite evident as baseball’s top homerun hitter since 2010.
Also on LinkedIn is Braves reliever Jason Zilli. In contrast to Bautista, Zilli lists details about his company, Pitch Perfect, which provides marketing for companies on a limited budget.
Retired Met catcher John Buck lists his company, Tools of Ignorance, which sells the Glove Guardian, a protective case for catcher’s masks.
Curt Schilling’s LinkedIn still prominently lists his video game company, 38 Studios, as current. Schilling has since said it cost him $50 million upon going under. He may want to update that.
Tommy John lists his Tommy John Pitching Academy up top. Only several paragraphs down does it mention he’s the namesake of sports’ most famous surgery.
Cy Young winner Brett Saberhagen’s LinkedIn says, “Retired MLB Pitcher, Entrepreneur, Philanthropist.” It would be nice if more former pro athletes’ profiles mentioned philanthropy.
Brian Doyle, who batted .438 for the Yankees in the 1978 World Series, lists himself as an Associate Pastor in Ft. Lauderdale.
Ex-second baseman Steve Sax’s profile says, “Professional Speaker, Executive and Personal Coach.” Nothing about that frequent psychological block causing him to throw balls into the stands.
Clicking on LinkedIn’s baseball players, Shaquille O’Neal’s profile appeared. It says, “Owner, A lot of Companies.” Shaq adds, “Proven to lead teams to championships. I mean multiple championships.”
Neither Familia nor Syndergaard are on LinkedIn. That’s just as well for Bautista. After Monday’s performance, it’s likely neither wants to connect with him anyway.
