Some successful college coaches simply cannot survive in the NFL, and Greg Schiano, head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is learning that the hard way.
NFL.com reports that Schiano may lose his job before the end of this season if the Buccaneers continue to lose and Schiano ultimately loses the locker room.
Tampa Bay started the season with playoff aspirations, but those have all but vanished as the team has lost all of their games this season and currently sit at 0-7 in the NFC South.
Greg Schiano has taken heat all season for his style of coaching. Schiano is known for his ‘my way or the highway’ approach to the game, one that hasn't been received well at the professional level.
His style of coaching can be seen on a unique play his defense has become known for at the end of games.
When opposing teams have all but won the game and are running quarterback kneels to wind the clock down, Schiano tries to take advantage of the offense’s relaxed tendencies.
Usually when a team is kneeling the ball, the game is presumed to be over, and the defense cannot do anything about it. However, Schiano has his defense attack the offensive line and quarterback in an attempt to force turnovers.
This was a strange development that arose last year, angering coaches (Tom Coughlin, specifically) and players because Schiano’s call was considered dangerous and pointless.
This year, current and former players have spoken out against Schiano.
Bucs cornerback and former New York Jet Darrelle Revis said that Schiano’s rules "are too strict,” according to FoxSports.com.
And Warren Sapp, an NFL Hall of Famer and former Buccaneer said, “If I’m down in Tampa, I’m questioning this whole thing because it’s a mafia style,” according to NFL.com. He went on to say that if the Bucs can't produce wins with such an intense culture, Schiano would lose the locker room.
When you combine this controversial coaching style with the Bucs' winless record, the question seems to be when, not if, Schiano will lose his job.
