Notebook: Rutgers (8-4) bowl eligible for fifth-straight season

West Virginia defeated Rutgers 24-21 in the 2009 regular-season finale for both teams Saturday at Rutgers Stadium.

* Rutgers finished the regular season 8-4 overall and 3-4 in the Big East Conference. The Scarlet Knights are bowl eligible for the fifth-straight season.

* The Rutgers defense held West Virginia to its second lowest total offense output of the season with 278 yards of offense.

* With SS Joe Lefeged's (Germantown, Md.) second-half kickoff return for a touchdown, Rutgers has two kickoff returns for touchdowns in its last five games. Senior CB Devin McCourty (Nanuet, N.Y.) returned the opening kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown at Connecticut on Oct. 31.

* The pair of kickoff returns for touchdowns marks the first time since the 2002 season RU has returned multiple kickoffs for a touchdown in the same season. Nate Jones had a pair of 100-yard kickoff returns for TDs against Tennessee and Syracuse.

* With a rush from true freshman QB Tom Savage (Springfield, Pa.) on a two-point conversion against West Virginia, Rutgers has successfully converted all five of its two-point conversion attempts this season.

* Rutgers, which entered the game 12th nationally in third-down efficiency defense, held West Virginia 2-for-14 on third down opportunities in the game.

* The attendance of 52,534 was the second sellout of the season. The season-opener vs. Cincinnati was also sold out.

* The 52,534 in attendance was the second largest crowd in Rutgers Stadium history.

Player Notes

* Tight end Shamar Graves (Woodbridge, N.J.) tied his career-high with three receptions and passed his previous career-high with 48 receiving yards in the first five minutes of the game against West Virginia.

* Sophomore PK San San Te (Conover, N.C.) connected on a pair of field goals against West Virginia. With the two field goals, he moved into a tie with Carmen Sclafani (1987-88) for fifth place on the school's all-time field goals list with 29.

* Junior DE Jonathan Freeny (Tampa, Fla.) recorded his team-leading 8.5 sack of the season.

* True freshman WR Mohamed Sanu (South Brunswick, N.J.) tied his career-high with 105 receiving yards on six catches. It marked the third 100-yard receiving game of the season for Sanu.

* True freshman LB Steve Beauharnais (Saddle Brook, N.J.) recorded a career-high seven tackles against West Virginia. His previous career-best tackle total was five against Louisville and Texas Southern.

* Redshirt freshman DT Scott Vallone (Central Islip, N.Y.) posted a career-high 11 tackles, including two for loss. His previous career-high for tackles in a game was five vs. Army (10/23/09). The two tackles for loss tied a career-high for Vallone.

* Senior LB Damaso Munoz (Miami, Fla.) equaled a career-high with 12 tackles. Munoz recovered his fourth fumble of the season with a third-quarter recovery against West Virginia. It is also the third of his career. He also recovered fumbles against Army, Pittsburgh and Howard this season.
