Sparta’s Erin Guthrie makes leap to professional soccer

Former Rutgers standout Erin Guthrie from Spart earned a spot on FC Gold Pride's opening day roster, the Santa Clara, Calif. team announced Saturday. The goalkeeper will serve as a developmental player and becomes the second Scarlet Knight to join the Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) league.

Guthrie was taken with the third pick of the fourth round in the 2010 WPS Draft.

Named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year, Guthrie posted a .47 goals against average, allowing just 10 goals in 21 games. Her GAA placed her fifth overall in the NCAA. The netminder posted a .885 save percentage — tied for sixth in the nation — and had 11 shutouts to extend her position as Rutgers all-time career shutouts leader with 44 clean sheets.

Formed in 2007, the WPS is the highest level women's professional soccer league in North America. Nine teams across the nation will compete in 2010.

FC Gold Pride will open up the 2010 season on the road Sunday, April 11 against Saint Louis Athletica and will return to the Bay Area for the home opener Saturday, April 17 against the reigning WPS Champion Sky Blue FC.
